New Direct Acting XM Valve Series
from Parker
The Pneumatic Division of Parker Hannifin Corporation is pleased to announce our New Direct Acting Valve - XM Series.
XM Inline Valve: The XM Valve is a 1/8", 2-Position, Single Solenoid, Spring Return 3-Way or 4-Way valve with AC or DC Operating Voltages. The 12 and 24VDC coils are rated for Mobile Voltage Operation. 3-Way valves can function as Normally Open or Normally Closed valves. Optional integrated individual flow controls are available on the 4-Way valves which meters the exhaust flow from each working port to the exhaust port of the valve. This option eliminates additional component flow controls and fittings between a cylinder and a valve.
IEM – Inlet Exhaust Manifolds: 3-Way and 4-Way Inline Valves can be mounted on the same IEM Manifold. 3-Way valves can be configured for Normally Open or Normally Closed function by mounting the 3-Way valve 180 degrees opposite to each other. Additional gaskets are not required for this feature. 4-Way valves with integrated flow controls can be mounted directly to the IEM Manifold since the adjustment screws are located on the body of the valve away from the manifold.
Subbase Manifolds: Inline valves have the working ports (2 and 4) tapped in the valve body. Subbase Valves require a manifold with working ports tapped 1/8" in each manifold station. Each manifold consists of a segmented subbase and an end plate kit. XM 3-Way and 4-Way subbase valves can be mounted on the same manifold assembly. Standard function of a 3-Way Subbase Valve is normally closed. Port Isolation Discs are used if 3-Way Normally Open and Normally Closed functions are required on the same manifold. The 4-Way integrated flow control is available on 4-Way subbase valves as well.
PDN offers the XM Valve as the replacement to the Microking Series Valves which will be discontinued August 1, 2007. If you would like information on how to cross a MicroKing Valve that is being used in a specific application to an XM Valve, just email us at
crossmymicroking@parker.com with a part number / application details and contact information. PDN will contact you to assist in this cross reference.

Swivel unit SRH – Modular is simply better
SCHUNK Inc. introduces the new series of 180° swivel heads SRH. The swivel heads of the new SRH are completely modular in structure and consist of the tried and tested SRU rotary modules combined with two swivel corners, EDF electric feed-throughs and MDF media feed-throughs. This means precise rotation and long tool life using proven components. Using standard components also means short delivery times and high availability of the components due to minimal spare parts inventory.
The new SRH series comes in six sizes and twelve torques ranging from 0.9 to 67.8 Nm (0.6 ft-lb to 50 ft-lb). The electric feed-through of the SRH is designed to use digital signals for sensors or simple actuators. Even bus signals can be fed through the unit as an additional option. The EDF feed-throughs ensure considerable greater reliability than the breakage-prone method of routing cables through the center bore of a rotary actuator.
Even more, the connections of the SRH swivel head are easily accessible and universally equipped with housing connectors or sockets. The media feed-through is directly connected to the mounting surfaces of the swivel head, and both the swivel head itself and the rotating grippers can be supplied with compressed air directly without hoses. This ensures the necessary flexibility for all automation solutions.

The Actuator Division of Parker Hannifin Corporation introduces a next-generation solution for NFPA cylinder applications.
The new 3MA Series and 4MA Series of cylinders deliver superior performance resulting from efficient design, reduced weight, low friction, and advanced sealing technology. The 4MA Series is designed for customization and offers availability of all options.
Because 3MA and 4MA rod lock cylinders are designed to hold loads in a static condition when air pressure is removed from the system, they are ideal for clamping, load holding or emergency stop (E-stop) applications.
Available in seven different bore sizes, from 1.125” to 5.00”, 3MA cylinders have strokes in any practical length and have a variety of rod diameters. 3MA cylinders have an operating temperature range of -10° F to +165° F (-23°C to +74°) and a maximum operating air pressure of 250 PSIG. The unique 1.125” bore includes a hydraulic version (Parker 3ML Series) with a maximum operating hydraulic pressure of 1,100 PSIG.
The 3MA Series is the latest in a line of Parker NFPA cylinders spanning 30 years of innovative design and production that includes MA Series and 2MA Series cylinders. Original breakthroughs introduced with these product lines included aluminum
end caps and tubing, check seal cushions, and tie-rod mounted sensors.
The use of lighter composites that deliver the same service life as aluminum or bronze, combined with die-cast
end cap design, make the average weight of the 3MA cylinder 15% less than comparable cylinders. Composite materials significantly reduce inertia of moving parts and generate less friction than other materials. An added advantage of composite piston and
end cap inserts is an automatic noise pollution reduction of 12 dB when compared with typical aluminum cylinder designs. Environmentally friendly, all 3MA materials are 100% recyclable, including the aluminum, steel, composite parts, and the nitrile and urethane seals.
All moving components in the 3MA cylinder are designed for low friction, which results in less wear. This is accomplished with zero leakage because of rounded-lip rod and piston seals that glide on lubricant film, self-lubricating
Carboxilated nitrile polymer to maximize seal life, and nitrile end seals on the smooth bore of the cylinder body, which is the optimal sealing surface.
The cylinder’s standard mount feature accommodates almost all NFPA mounts as accessories. 3MA’s flexible design means that mountings can be installed at the factory or from separately ordered kits. For precise load holding and emergency-stop situations, where safety is critical, the 3MAJ rod lock cylinder is also available. Parker 3MAJ rod locks are IP67 rated, exceed NEMA 4X requirements, and are classified as EN 954 Category 1 for robust applications.
The innovative 3MA features advanced end cap and piston design. Anodized, high-pressure, die-cast aluminum heads and caps for flexible mounting. Full-flow ports combine with low inertia piston rod assembly to minimize cylinder response time. Floating check-seal design combines sealing capability of a lipseal with check valve action for quick stroke reversal, while outstanding cushioning performance is the result of sophisticated piston architecture and durable urethane seals.
Sensor-ready, the 3MA has a unique extruded-profile cylinder body that provides integrated grooves to minimize sensor installation time, maximize sensor protection, and eliminate the need for brackets. A magnetic piston ring is standard. Sensors drop into grooves in the cylinder body for easy, inexpensive assembly and protection. Most sensors are CE approved and UL listed, with options that include
ATEX, NAMUR (intrinsically safe) compliance, as well as meeting CSA and Weld Immune specifications. All sensors are RoHS compliant or excluded from the directive.
Proven exterior toughness is established from corrosion-resistant anodized aluminum alloy heads, caps and cylinder body; zinc plated steel
end cap fasteners; case-hardened, hard chrome plated steel piston rods; and a durable urethane wiper designed to remove external debris and adherents from the piston rod during the entire stroke.
Standard 3MA mode code options include piston bumper seals, traditional ¼” urethane bumpers, fluorocarbon rod seals, stainless steel rods and double rod ends.
The Parker 4MA, designed for customization, meets the demand when cylinder flexibility is mandatory and access to all cylinder options is required. Standard features of the 4MA Series include a larger bore size range, standard and oversize rods and an externally removable rod gland (bearing). Model code options include many porting styles, high temperature (to +250°F) and low temperature (to -50°F) ratings, hydraulic service to 400 PSIG, a HI LOAD gland option for side load conditions, a metallic rod wiper gland option for rod adherents, stainless steel rods, a HB slide package for conversion to a guided cylinder, an ACVB option for an air cylinder/valve combination unit, a LPSO option for continuous piston rod position sensing (with LDT), and a 4MAJ rod lock version (all bores). All available options are detailed in the Parker catalog.
Private labeling is available for both the 3MA Series and the 4MA Series at no charge (text only). Machine designs incorporating 3MA and 4MA cylinders are facilitated by configurable 2-D and 3-D CAD files available at www.parker.com/pneumatics.
Parker 3MA and 4MA Series cylinders are domestically manufactured in strategic locations as part of a comprehensive customer service model that focuses on quick delivery, minimization of time-to-customer and cost-to-customer concerns, and the capability to accommodate non-standard designs with minimal lead-time adjustments.

rubber, eliminates the problems of seals deforming or extruding under conditions of high pressure or flow.
The precision ground-molded spool construction lessens unit complexity, increases flow rates, ensures stable seal performance in high flow/pressure drop situations and offers
robust performance in a wide range of operating temperatures.
Viking Xtreme provides enhanced performance for a variety of mobile applications such as truck/trailer, bus/coach and rail, as well as non-mobile uses including mining, wood cutting,
pulp/paper processing and sawmill operations.
The new Viking Xtreme is available in three versions – solenoid operated, remote air pilot, and manually actuated. With a choice of 1/8˝, 1/4˝, 3/8˝, and 1/2˝ port sizes, the series offers
peak performance in the most rugged environments. Viking Xtreme is a robust IP65-rated valve, constructed with an anodized aluminum body, and a bore polished to high surface finish
for maximum flow capacity and extended life. Thermo set plastic coils, stainless steel fasteners and anodized aluminum end caps complete the product package and provide durability
and resilience. A porous sintered bronze vent plug is built-in to prevent contamination ingression.
The Pneumatic Division designs and manufactures air control valves, vacuum products, air preparation components and specialty products for a myriad of industry segments.

New O-ring Gripper ORG 85 for internal and external Assembly Applications
SCHUNK Inc. introduces a new gripper to its extensive line of end-effectors, the O-Ring Gripper ORG 85. This new 6-finger gripper is the world’s first gripper that fits O-rings not only
to shafts, but also in holes.
Two triple jaw sets that move independently from one another and an integral stroke enable an assembly procedure without precedent, which redefines the concept of “operational
reliability”. The O-ring no longer snaps from the fingers into the groove in an uncontrolled manner, but instead is first released from the first three fingers, and only afterwards released
from the last three fingers. The advantage: the O-ring has no choice but to slip into the groove.
Achieving a reliable process is a frequent problem with conventional multi-finger grippers that are normally used for fitting O-rings. On the one hand, they can only manage external
fitting (e.g. onto the shaft), on the other hand, once fitted, the O-rings are not always correctly placed in the groove.
The clamping width of the diameter to be fitted is truly impressive, and ranges from fingernail-sized O-rings with a diameter of 5 mm to 30 times larger O-rings with a diameter of 150
mm. The only required set-up operation is the change of gripper fingers. The stroke of the two sets of triple jaws range from 0 – 21 mm for triple jaw A and from 0 – 15 mm for triple
jaw B.

Lightweight Polyethylene Tubing Now Stocked in Two Styles
Both Multi-Purpose and Specialty Needs Addressed
Southampton, PA — Now available from NewAge Industries are two types of polyethylene tubing: linear low density formula and a style co-extruded with EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate). While both are made from non-toxic ingredients conforming to FDA standards, they offer different performance characteristics. Uses include air lines, chemical and fluid transfer, food and beverage processing and distribution, pharmaceutical processing, pneumatics and instrumentation, potable water, deionized water, wire jacketing, laboratory applications, and decorative coverings.
Linear low density polyethylene tubing is a lightweight, flexible product suitable for a variety of uses due to its relatively low cost. It offers no transfer of odor or taste to critical streams, good dielectric properties, and is chemically inert, forming a good barrier to gases, vapors, and moisture. The linear low density formula provides enhanced resistance to stress cracking (over that of low density). It’s durable and stays flexible at temperatures well below 0°F.
The co-extruded version – polyethylene-lined EVA – performs much like linear low density polyethylene tubing and offers additional features. Its ingredients conform to USP Class VI standards, and it provides greater flexibility over linear low density because of the bonded EVA outer layer. Polyethylene-lined EVA may be substituted for PTFE fluoropolymer tubing in applications involving working temperatures below 100°F, which can result in a cost savings of 50% or more.
Linear low density polyethylene tubing is stocked in translucent natural color in a dozen sizes ranging from .170” to 1-1/2” I.D. Select sizes are also stocked in colors (black, red, blue, green, and yellow). Polyethylene-lined EVA, stocked in nine sizes from 1/8” to 1” I.D., is available in translucent natural. Push-to-connect fittings are an excellent match for both polyethylene tubing styles and are also stocked by NewAge Industries. The fittings, called
Newloc®, are available in plastic or brass.

News from the JADE product family
Gardner Denver Thomas GmbH in Puchheim has an extension to the JADE series. In addition to the so-called “angular” diaphragm for vacuum or pressure operations at high flow, a “flat” diaphragm version is now available that can be used for pressure as well as vacuum operation. This new diaphragm is optimised for higher pressures rather than for higher flow.
The basis of this 2-headed diaphragm pump model 1420VDP remains the twin configuration of the pump heads. Perfectly balanced and due to the principal of the assistance provided by the second pump chamber at back pressure, the efficiency is increased by up to 90% compared to single headed pumps. This unique energy balance results in a longer battery life.
In parallel operation the pump creates a final pressure of 1,9 bar and 73% vacuum with a free flow of 6,3 l/min. Depending upon choice of motor the pump has the compact dimensions of 87 to 112 x 30 x 75 mm and a weight of 220 to 210 g.
At a sound level of less than 45 dB(A) the 1420 VDP is extremely quiet with very low vibration.
Gardner Denver Thomas offers the pump with different motors – from low cost to high quality. The brushless motor version with integrated controller offers outstanding possibilities for flow control. The pump is available in 12 and 24 V as well as with different eccentrics and materials for aggressive media.
Typical applications for the 1420 VDP are medical and analytic applications, pollution monitoring, fuel cells and battery operated equipment.

RACINE TAKES A STAND WITH ITS NEW TECHNOLOGY
For Racine, technology keeps evolving. The company has launched its new air test stand to conduct quality airflow calibrations on gas meters. The system includes a set of seven
sonic nozzles arranged in a common manifold. Each nozzle has its own control valve allowing a quick connection to the calibration manifold. The calibration manifold can
accommodate wafer meters from 1/2" to 4" in diameter, along with insertion meters in a 6" diameter pipe. The complete stand can accurately measure flow rates from 0.4 to 2,800
cubic feet per minute with ±0.5% accuracy. Sonic nozzles are internationally recognized as the best secondary transfer standard for gas flow measurement and one of the most
precise gas flow meters available today.
The air test stand's sonic nozzles have many advantages over other devices. In a system with constant upstream pressure, sonic nozzles are a constant volumetric flow meter, but
with regulated pressure supply, the sonic nozzle becomes a gas flow regulator. The test stand can therefore dial in a flow rate by setting the inlet pressure to the nozzle. They have
no moving parts and offer long term accuracy and repeatability. They also create a shock wave at the throat of the nozzle. Once this shock wave exists at a fixed flow rate,
downstream fluctuations cannot propagate upstream. This means they do not require differential pressure measurements across the nozzle, unlike other Venturis and orifice meters,
which can lead to additional errors in flow calculations.
Flow rate is not affected by downstream flow disturbances or varying downstream pressure (up to about 85% of the inlet pressure), but rather is solely a function of upstream
pressure and temperature.
The software developed for this technology provides more reliable and time efficient results by automating some of the calibration process. With a set of calibration target points, the
software controls a pressure regulator, which sets the flow rate, and monitors inlet temperature and pressure to the nozzle that determines actual flow rate. The actual flow rate is
then compared to the meter's flow rate and the amount of error between them is displayed in real time. This error is used to calculate a correction factor that can be downloaded to the
meter in real time. After calibration, the software creates a detailed calibration certificate that is supplied to the customer.
The combination of sonic nozzles, manifolds, and the customized software provides a test stand that is highly accurate over a wide flow range while maintaining ease of use. The air
stands capabilities provide a new level of dependable and repeatable results on all of Racine's gas meter calibrations.

Unique Online Configurator Tool for Handling Systems
Configure Easy-2-Combine pneumatic handling systems quickly and easily
Now it’s even easier to design custom pneumatic handling systems with the online Rexroth Easy-2-Combine configurator.
Featuring pneumatic and electric components which can interface with one another, the Easy-2-Combine automation system from Rexroth offers remarkable solutions for most handling tasks. With the new Easy-2-Combine configurator from Rexroth, users can calculate and display entire handling modules online quickly and precisely.
The configurator can quickly and easily compile a handling module (a pick-and-place unit, for example) – without any extra calculation work. As an added benefit, the configurator also provides complete documentation including CAD data for the user.
The tool is easy to use and can be accessed by anyone over the Internet. Before configuring a module, users must enter information required for design: the working space and
work piece weight as well as whether or not rotary movements are necessary. After choosing the type of installation, users are presented with further parameters such as the rotation angle or the maximum time per movement. Using this data, the system works out the components while taking the mass moments of inertia into account.
This tool saves users much of their time usually spent on complicated calculations. Users can select from a variety of gripper versions, rotary compact modules, and linear axes. Once specific parameters have been entered – the necessary stroke, for instance – the system determines all components that are compatible with one another and which optimally meet all the requirements.
At the end of the process, a complete parts list is generated which even spans cylinder switches and fittings. Additionally, the user is given a material number which can designate the handling module as either a kit with mounting parts or as a preassembled unit, depending o | |
